How Rapsodo Works

Rapsodo is a radar-triggered camera system pitch-tracking tool that captures real-time ball-flight data, allowing pitchers to get an accurate understanding of exactly what their pitches are doing during flight to make immediate optimizations and improvements in their pitch delivery. Rapsodo brings powerful insights into every pitch, by helping players and coaches improve their performance through real data. This allows for now-standard pitch measurements like velocity and spin rate, but, because the data is captured visually, Rapsodo units can also measure spin axis, true spin and spin efficiency. Rapsodo gives aspiring athletes of all ages and skill levels amazing tools and data to help improve their game.

Rapsodo Baseball 8 Realtime Pitch Metrics

Spin Rate The velocity rate at which the ball spins from the time it leaves the pitcher’s hand, measured in rotations per minute (RPM). There is a stronger correclation between spin rate and swinging-strike-percentage than between velocity and swinging-strike-percentage.	True Spin Rate The spin directly creating movement on a pitch. Also called “useful spin”, it is perpendicular to the direction the ball is traveling. It deflects the path of the ball, thus has direct implications on its movement and trajectory. Its comparison to the total spin (calculated in percentage) provides the spin efficiency.	Pitch Velocity How fast a pitch travels from the time it leaves a pitcher’s hand, measured in miles per hour (MPH).
Spin Axis The tilt, or angle, of the baseball, measured in degrees, created by the Magnus Effect. The Magnus Effect is created by the air pressure surrounding the spinning baseball on its path to home plate.	Spin Efficiency The percentage of spin directly creating movement on a pitch. This is calculated by taking the ratio of the true spin of the baseball divided by the total spin. The true spin takes out the side spin of the baseball which technically offers more RPMs but does not effect the movement of the pitch in any way.	Horizontal and Vertical Break Deviation of the position of the ball when it crosses the strike zone in comparison to what this position would have been in the absence of spin. The deviation (break) is measured horizontally and vertically, in inches. “-” means deviation to the left and “+” means deviation to the right.

Rapsodo Usage Examples

The additional pitch-flight data captured by the unit allows coaches and players to ask better questions and get better results. Combining Rapsodo and high-speed video is a must to learn more about how pitcher’s breaking pitches work. Examples:

• Reshaping the way a curveball breaks. Moving from a slurve-y pitch with lots of glove-side break to one with more 12-6 break.
• Adding a split-finger. Normally, the process for learning a new pitch can take months or years. When you start with specific velocity/break/spin targets in mind, this process is shortened to a matter of days to get a usable pitch and weeks to fully refine a Spring-Training-Ready splitter.
• Adding velocity to a breaking pitch. By throwing a cutter harder, learning how this impacts the break profile.
